Ishim ibn Talha's tale begins in the arid heart of the desert oasis city of Baakum, nestled along the primary grain and salt trade route that meanders through the unforgiving sands. He was born to a lineage steeped in the caravan trade, his father, Talha ibn Maluk ibn Malik, an esteemed kervanbashi renowned for leading merchant caravans on grueling journeys to markets in the distant lands of Samarria and Omluk. The young Ishim was exposed to the intricacies of the trade from an early age, absorbing the ancient knowledge of navigating by the celestial stars and mastering the art of camel handling.

Tragedy struck when Ishim was a mere 15 years old, as the relentless sun sickness claimed the life of his father, leaving the family's caravan business in his inexperienced hands. Despite his youth, Ishim proved to be small but scrappy, steadily honing his skills in the art of negotiation through years of treacherous travels across the scorching sands. Over time, he transformed his family's modest caravan into a flourishing trading empire, with his caravanserai in Baakum becoming an indispensable waystation for travelers braving the inhospitable desert.

Ishim's journey to power and prominence did not stop at trade, however. He strategically leveraged his wealth and influential connections, eventually marrying the daughter of Ottobay Kelchi, a distant relative of the Omluk Sultan. With this marriage, he solidified his claim to the Minatti region and took the title of Bay of Minatti, even though his realm consisted primarily of a scattering of life-sustaining oases amidst the harsh, desolate landscape.

The Bay of Minatti was a master of diplomacy, using his wit and tributes to keep himself in the Sultan's favor. He skillfully deepened trade relationships with the formidable Ozlan clan, whose mighty mahouts and their imposing elephants controlled the lucrative routes southward.

In his inner circle stood his unwavering childhood friend, Kasim, who served as the chief advisor and captain of the palace guards. However, as Minatti's wealth and influence burgeoned, insidious court gossip began to circulate. Whispers of Ishim's affections for a striking concubine over his own wife sowed discord within the court, threatening to destabilize his carefully constructed realm.

Although always slender, Ishim's health took a hit when he contracted dysentery during a perilous caravan journey. While he did recover, his constitution remained fragile, rendering public appearances a taxing endeavor. Consequently, he delegated more and more of his responsibilities to Kasim and retreated to the resplendent gardens that he had cultivated.

Behind the façade of a shrewd and calculating ruler, Ishim concealed an artistic spirit. Under a pseudonym, he penned poetry that captured the essence of the desert and its haunting beauty. He also nurtured a collection of exotic songbirds, which filled the night with their melodious tunes. During the quiet hours of darkness, he would gaze at the same desert stars that once guided him in his boyhood, pondering the legacy he was forging amidst the shifting sands of time.
